I don’t often find gold when metal detecting. OK, truth is, I’ve never found gold. I’m not really out looking for it as I hunt for old coins and relics. And, well, I still haven’t found gold while metal detecting! This was actually an eyeball find. My wife and daughter and I went to a friend’s 2nd birthday party. Earlier this year (in May) we also celebrated this little girl’s christening. Both parties were in the backyard with lots of little kids running around. Well, less than one minute after arriving, I looked down and saw something shiny. A ring? Yes, a gold ring. Someone must’ve just dropped it I thought. When picking it up it seemed as though it wasn’t a fresh drop. Some grass had grown around it. So I brushed it off and handed it to the homeowner. “Someone lose this?”
Her expression was of complete surprise. Her mother-in-law had lost it in May at the Christening. They looked everywhere but couldn’t find it. This was her mother-in-law’s wedding band, and she was heart broken to have lost it, especially since her husband passed away 12 years ago. Although not at the party this time, I’m thrilled to know that it’ll be back where it belongs with the one who needs it the most.
