17th Century Dutch Doublet

Posted by on September 22, 2014

About an hour after finding the pre-1830 NY Militia button, I was getting ready to call it a day. As I made my way toward my car, I kept swinging my coil. I got a jumpy signal and decided to dig. Only about an inch deep, an odd looking button revealed itself. I wasn’t exactly sure what it was. Thanks to Don Hartman who suggested it was a 17th century — that’s right, 1600s!! — doublet button. Taking into account the location I found it and construction, it’s seemingly of Dutch make. I am thrilled beyond words as I never thought I’d find something this old in the United States. Yee-haw!
